Carmilla’s Gambit – 7 Days Out

Two book releases in the next three weeks. Carimlla’s Gambit enters the world next Tuesday, 3 June, and Wolf in the Sanctuary howls from the bayous on 10 June.

I’ve put my dark fantasy Patreon, Tales of the Veiled Rose, on hold for now. In fact, I’m going to be taking a break from Sam Hain for a bit. No, I’m not abandoning her, because I do have big plans. And the next book has a tentative outline drafted. But Carmilla’s Gambit has a lot of dark themes, and Wolf in the Sanctuary does as well. These two books together are, in many ways, a fictionalized account of my life and mental/spiritual struggles. I put a lot into them, and I’m proud of them.

But they are dark. Carmilla’s Gambit features abduction, physical and psychological torture, and struggles with depression and both PTSD and CPTSD. There is also a lot of blood. And there are multiple deaths of named characters. Yes, the torture is described in detail; the scene is brief, but it exists. And for those who have followed the series, it is a throwback to events in Carmilla’s Ghost.

Care was taken in writing these moments. I struggle with depression and CPTSD. My dissertation dealt with these conditions (as well as suicidal ideation), and I know these themes and scenes can be triggering and/or distressing for readers. Sensitivity readers were employed, as is my habit. And, as always, content warnings can be found on the copyright page.

And yes, I know mentioning these things could steer some potential readers away from the book, but I want my readers going into my work prepared. Their enjoyment and emotional wellbeing are important to me, so I lay these cards on the table. Like Destiny Grimm, consider me your emotional support German.

What’s Next?

I’m taking a step back for a bit. I’ve written a lot of dark things that I’m very proud of. But that level of fictional darkness paired with the darkness and stress of the world around me has taken a toll. I need a break.

So, as of right now, I will be working on a cozy, gothic fantasy project that will likely be just for me. I may show it to a select few to get feedback, but it may also never see the light of day. This is for me. This is to rest and refresh.

Want to Buy Early?

Carmilla’s Gambit is the seventh book in my Adventures of Sam Hain series, but like all the other books, each is a self-contained story that can be read by itself or as part of the series. It releases on 3 June, but you can buy paperbacks early by visiting my website! Retail price is $15.00 US, but on my website they will be sold for $12.99.
